FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some example applications of BLU Acceleration technology?
Any analytics workload such as:

  • Real-time fraud detection where every second counts
  • Analytics for better customer service
  • Reporting on OLTP data, where BLU Acceleration can eliminate indexes and other performance-related objects while using less storage
  • Updating older warehouses on existing hardware where expanding the warehouse footprint is costly

How can BLU Acceleration help you meet business user needs faster?

BLU Acceleration delivers business answers at lightning-fast speeds.  No more issues with reporting speed that could impact SLAs and no performance optimization requests from business users to speed up their queries.  And for the technical team, BLU Acceleration is simple to use.  Even as the information needs of business users evolve, it’s simple for you to be highly responsive. Simply write the new query without the need for performance tuning. The right answers fast means happy business users.

Is BLU Acceleration difficult to implement?
Absolutely not! It really is as simple as load and go. With the use of a single registry variable (DB2_WORKLOAD=ANALYTICS), DB2 will autoconfigure the environment for optimal analytic performance. The only work to implement BLU Acceleration is to define the tables and load the data. DB2_WORKLOAD=ANALYTICS ensures optimal configuration and automatic statistics collection. Once the data is loaded, you’re ready to query – no secondary indexes or MQTs to create.

What are the recommended evaluation steps?
Create a new BLU Acceleration database or create a traditional row-store database and then convert to BLU Acceleration using the db2convert utility. At your option you can also use Optim Query Workload Tuner to assess which tables are candidates for conversion to BLU Acceleration. Learn more in the developerWorks article.

How can I learn more about BLU Acceleration?
Learning BLU Acceleration is easy. Simply complete the three step roadmap  that contains a 1-hour BLU Acceleration course, the BLU Acceleration eBook and the ability to test drive BLU Acceleration.   You can supplement this learning with the range of additional content provided on the Resources page.

Is there a trial or proof of technology to test it out in my environment?
Yes! You  can download the DB2 10.5 with BLU Acceleration 90-day free trial software  to try it in your environment.  Be sure to select the warehouse option on the download page.

In addition, can contact your IBM sales rep to request an in-person demo or presentation or inquire about upcoming Proof of Technology workshops in your area.

What do I need to know about indexing?

Well virtually nothing. The only indexes used in BLU Acceleration today are to enforce primary key uniqueness constraints. The same way you define a primary key on a row-store table to enforce uniqueness, you’d do the same on column-store. But that’s where indexing ends which saves on storage and administration.

What do I need to know about maintenance and management?
That much of it is automated, like statistics collection and space reclamation. There is no need for indexing or performance tuning. Other functions, like backup and restore, are the same as for row-organized tables in DB2.

In which editions of DB2 is BLU Acceleration available?
BLU Acceleration is available in DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition and DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition. For development and testing purpose only, the DB2 Developer Edition is also another option to access BLU Acceleration capabilities.
